It has been nice having Meredith home. She is definitely helping me keep focused. It is always a bit of a challenge when you work at home to avoid distractions but knowing you have someone keeping tabs on you definitely helps.

As I'm working on my script I'm really trying to work in a few more of DC villians. There are so many great ones, I really want to have the chance to draw as many as I can and the great thing about writing your own script is that you can pretty much, DC marketing plans not withstanding, draw who ever you want Batman to fight next. I'd be curious to see who people would like to see Batman fight, I'll see about doing another poll.

By the way I really liked the ideas for the website and I'll pass them along to Meredith. Maybe we'll create a section with non-comic work.
We will try to have prints and remarked comics up as well as some original artwork. I think that the new website looks great and I'm really looking forward to having a more active online presence again.

It took me a while but I've finally finished up with the third issue of Dark Knight. I'm really happy with how it turned out and thanks to everyone for being patient.Dave Finchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16381603076085518154noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1845078204580456661.post-40291649488765060292011-02-24T17:16:00.000-08:002011-02-24T17:16:13.583-08:00R.I.P. Dwayne McDuffieI met Dwayne McDuffie in Detroit at a comic book show way back in 1993, just about 8 months or so before I started working in this business. I was showing work around, and I was having a bit of a hard time getting anyone to take a look. Mr. McDuffie was reviewing someone's portfolio as I walked by, so I very quickly got in line and waited. When I got a chance to show him my work I learned more in a few minutes than I had in months. Nobody else ever broke down the simple rules of basic storytelling and composition for me better. He was patient, open, and he gave it all to me straight without any flowery nonsense. It made me a better artist, and it helped me keep pushing on to my goal. I'm eternally grateful, and it took me a long time to get the chance, but I was finally able to thank him not that long ago.

He was a great professional, and he will be missed.
But what can I say...I'm just going to put up some stuff. I'm sitting here on pins and needles for my Batman: Dark Knight book to come out tomorrow. I've had some copies for almost a week now, and I've shown it to friends and family, but I'm really looking forward to having it come out. There's a lot of art that I have to post, but I just have to wait until it's shown somewhere, so I've been kind of quiet here. Anyway, until tomorrow, when I can post a bunch of pencils from the book (not that I'll get around to it tomorrow exactly...), here's a few things that I scrounged together.
It went through a few steps, and I took scans as I went, so I figured I'd post them here.

This is my underdrawing. I don't bother putting much detail into them anymore. I found I have to do all the work again with paint, so why do it twice?

Then I did a tonal wash with burnt sienna, and started blocking in colors. I had no idea where I was going with the picture, but I don't really have time to be doing prelims, or color roughs or whatever. I had to go pick up the kids from school, so this is where it stopped for now.
I was done. It really didn't take very long. It's a single figure, and I'm getting more comfortable with my color mixing, so I'm not losing as much time with the unpredictability of the paint. I've been greying all my colors with their compliments, but I've found lately that using black and white is a more effective solution in some situations. Red dulls to brown the same way with green or black. No difference for me, except for a more predictable result. And blue can darken to a bit of a purple, or a bit of an orange, or straight black, all with a different, but useable effect. So anyway, point being...I'm finding that using compliments gets great results, and I can really make use of the warm to cool effects of mixing that way, but in some cases (like greying yellow) I need to be creative. Black and yellow make green, but so does it's compliment. If I want to grey it, I need to step from yellow, to ochre, to raw sienna, and then I can introduce black. Unless I want the green.....
It ended up being much more designy than I had intended, but I kind of like it this way.
So I'm going the easy route. I'm going to break it up into parts, and I'm going to use art from my favorite artists as examples.

Today I'm going with Frank Frazetta because I want to talk about the best cover composition around. Obviously you can't do this each and every time, and there are so many other very effective designs, but this one, for me, is the strongest. It's the simple triangle composition.

I think these pictures really speak for themselves. The triangle composition is the gift that just keeps on giving! Frazetta used it for arguably most of his covers, and it never, ever gets old. If you really look for it in all of these covers, it couldn't be more obvious, but it works every time.

For it to work best, the triangle can't be broken by any major elements, but if it's too perfect it can become static. Notice how Frazetta outlines a triangle in his compositions, but doesn't completely form the shape in an unbroken way. Except for when he does, but then notice how he uses elements to play against the shape and add visual interest, like in the cover with the guy with the guns and girls. The guns are small enough, and peripheral enough that they can break the composition, and he's angled them in such a way as to frame the main character's face, and slash some movement across the page. That movement stops your eye from simply following the too obvious triange shape.

As a bit of an aside, I can't help but mention Frazetta's use of light and detail in his compositions. Notice how focused his lighting is, with the greatest contrast in his center of interest, and points of light hit on other elements in the picture, just enough to draw your eye across them. He always knew what the focus of his picture was, and he knew how to draw you there, and then lead your eye around to other secondary elements, almost like a visual tour. That's all accomplished through use of focused lighting. No photo reference is going to teach you that one!

The other element I mentioned is detail. Because Frazetta was all about instant visual impact, he was very careful to not detail elements of his pictures that were secondary to that goal. That takes so much discipline....it's much easier to noodle everything in sight! I could learn a thing or two from that...

Anyway, more later.
Dave Finchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16381603076085518154noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1845078204580456661.post-39154773233409030562010-11-27T06:13:00.000-08:002010-11-27T06:13:11.344-08:00superman super quicky color sketchThis is watercolor too. I did this last week very, very fast. It's actually mostly acrylic on the figure over the watercolor. I've found that you need a hair dryer for the watercolor, or you end up with a mess really fast, and I got impatient with this one, so acrylic took over. I figure I'd like to find a balance between the two eventually.

Color mixing went very fast for this too. I'm getting more confident with it. My blues are greyed with orange, and my reds with green. I'm finding that my blues go toward orange too much, and I think I'm going to start using black and white to grey my colors a bit more along with compliments. It really depends on the color though. Because every color has a cast to it, and isn't a perfect blue or orange, when you mix them to get grey you can get unpredictable results, and I like that, but I want to get more control over it in a more predictable way, so straight up grey should help.

Someone I met in San Diego even gave me the bag with my artwork on it that they were giving away at San Diego that I never got at the time. I got asked about my blog, and I feel like I forgot why I started it in the first place. Sure, there's headaches, but ultimately it's about all the people who I meet at shows, and online who are so supportive and positive.

I was thinking about putting a watermark on my art, but honestly, that kind of technology is beyond me. I'm just going to let it go, and deal with ebay when it comes up. It's worth it.

So anyway, since I don't have much to contribute beyond that, I'm going to put up some new art.
We have come to this decision because of the extreme number of people stealing his work off of this blog and passing it off as their own on ebay and other places.

Our deepest regrets.
Finch has been dazzling comic fans for more than 15 years since he debuted his unique style in the pages of Image’s hit title, Cyberforce. Finch is perhaps best known for his lengthy run at Marvel, during which he captivated audiences with his riveting work on Avengers: Disassembled, Moon Knight, New Avengers, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimatum and many other titles. Finch made headlines in January 2010 with the announcement of his exclusive contract with DC Comics, which Comic Book Resources (CBR) described as a “truly seismic shift in the marquee creator's career path.” "I've been a DC fan for a really long time, and I always knew that I'd love the opportunity to work in the DCU at some point," Finch told CBR in his first interview on his new deal. Finch is slated to illustrate all 26 of DC's bi-weekly Brightest Day covers and fans are eagerly awaiting news of his other projects within the DC universe and beyond.

(That's from the Mid-Ohio blog! Very nice.)Dave Finchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16381603076085518154noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1845078204580456661.post-67771697535442851092009-09-30T07:30:00.000-07:002009-09-30T08:28:30.546-07:00Line WeightsLine weights aren't probably something that you're thinking "wow, won't this be fun and useful to learn!" I mean, rendering has some kind of coolness to it, but line weights, when they're working, totally disappear. When they're not working, or aren't there, that's when things can look pretty amateurish.

So with that in mind, I figured I would cover them next. I do have some requests that I'm going to get to over the next little bit, but this was a biggy for me, and relatively easy to get across, I think, so here goes.

This is a simple figure that I drew with a flat line. There's no weight going on here with the lines at all, and as a result it really lacks a lot of depth. You can go ahead and give me grief about the monkey long arm if you like.... It's a quicky!

Now here is the same drawing with line weights added. They instantly give the figure some heft, really help show which forms are in front of others, and even give the figure a sense of lighting! Ahem. If I do say so myself....

Now, lots of people think that this is an inking technique, and traditionally that is true, but nowadays pencilers don't leave these sort of things to chance. If you do, you may get lucky and get someone who really knows his stuff, but do you want to be so beholden to a good inker? Besides, more and more pencilers are forgoing inking altogether now. Many publishers may decide it's easier to go with someone who gives them tight enough pencils that they can be tighter with their budget!

Fortunately line weights are easy, easy to figure out how to do properly and consistantly. Honestly...

Here are the rules as I know them to be. And I know that different people do things differently, but hey, if you like how someone else does it then you need to observe their work and learn their rules! Inside curves, undersides, and connecting points should always have a thicker line. This assumes that you have lighting from above. If you have lighting from somewhere else then adjust appropriately. For instance, the top of Captain America's head could even have a broken line...but if you break the line where it connects to the neck, it'll just look flat and lifeless.

Figure 1 above illustrates this point in very, very simple terms. Where the mounds connect is shored up, but the crests of the mound is broken. The eye completes the line, and the break kind of gives the drawing some air... If you did this the opposite way around you would have something that really doesn't read well.

Figure 2 shows an underside curve. As you can see, it curves inside and under, and it would be a natural place for shadowing if the lighting were to come from above, so that's the place that gets the thicker line. Where it curves up toward the light, it thins out, and could even be broken... Frank Miller's work is such a great example of how drawings can hold up without lines where the light is.

Figure 3 shows how an inside curve goes to a connecting point. I finished one and left one so you could see the difference.

Ok. So that's line weights. But there's something else that's very closely related that I feel like I should uh....relate.

If you can ignore the texture on this picture....I'm almost out of good Marvel paper right now, and even photocopy paper, so I'm using photocopy paper with stuff printed on the other side, and it's showing up on the scanner.... I tried to erase it as best I could, but what do you want? It's free.

So figure four shows two arms. One is a contour line, with no connecting points at all. The second has connecting points where forms overlap. Now, in order to do this, you have to know which forms overlap which, but unless you show that consistantly, it doesn't read. It's very simple, but something I see missing all the time. Broken lines at connections, and overlapping that fights form are major problems in portfolios I see from artists who I know could fix it if they were just aware of the problem. Now take these connecting points in figure four, and throw the line weights on them, and you have a figure that's practically complete!

I'm reading this post, and I'm feeling like I'm not as clear as I could be on one point, so here it is. Figure 5 shows a connecting point that's been broken, and one that hasn't. The broken one is really not a connecting point at all, is it? It's just two floating lines! I would challenge you to tell me which one is in front of the other. Now imagine a picture with this problem repeated all over! It's a flat mess. The connecting point that hasn't been broken though is clear and easy to read. The top line is in front of the bottom.Dave Finchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16381603076085518154noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1845078204580456661.post-36537566326563097322009-09-08T10:04:00.000-07:002009-09-08T10:13:42.849-07:00Rendering, part 1

Ok. so I'm helping a friend with some rendering techniques, and I'm breaking it down as I go, so I figured I'd throw what I'm doing up here. On one hand I feel like I'm learning from previous paintings how to not waste time painting in things that I'll have to cover, but I've still done that in some places. I feel like I'm mostly happy with my value relationships, aside from some pushing and pulling on the rocks. I'm going to put some more orange mountains with purple shadowing behind her, and some purpled mountains further in the distance, and then some blue sky with yellow clouds with purple shadows at the top. ...That's the plan anyway. I find that this stuff changes as I go along.

I wanted to make an observation here as well. I've been mixing my shadows by adding complimentary colors to my body tone, and while that works, I was having a terrible time getting predictable results, and predictable warm or cool shadows. Also, I was struggling to make my shadows work together on different color surfaces. ...So started mixing black with my body color, along with purple, which is my overall shadow color. Boom. Predictable results, AND shadows that work together as a whole! I still have a lot of figuring to do before I can get any good with color, but I'm enjoying the process.

Gag me with a Toon is getting closer, and Steven Dailey has updated the show information here.

http://stevendaily.com/?p=84

I'm really looking forward to meeting some of you there! Just lately I've been feeling like I'm getting a sense of what I want to do with my painting, and I wanted to have a place to share my thoughts as I work. I'm going to post progress on new pieces, and info on my process, along with my thoughts on artists that I like and why I like them.

I'm going to start with a Hellboy picture that I've just finished, and I've got some others that I can't show yet, but should be able to soon.Dave Finchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16381603076085518154noreply@blogger.com5
