Changing/Closing Blog

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the closing of David's blog. We have come to this decision because of the extreme number of people stealing his work off of this blog and passing it off as their own on ebay and other places.

Our deepest regrets.

Sincerely,
Meredith Finch

Hi Meredith I´m brazilian illustrator and I am saddened by this news is unfortunately a loss for the world of comics, with this blog I learned quit a lote. Because these people we lost is very bad intensional

Raymond Jacob said...

Meredith, have you considered putting watermarks on his work? Thats what Neal Adams does with his work. In the past he had issues with people trying to pirate his work on ebay.

Sincerely, the more i'm getting old, the more I'm astounded to see how some people can be so.... disgusting : (

I join the others to say how much I'm sad and angry, and to testify to David and to you all my sympathy and all my respect.

I hope Dave isn't too upset, I suppose he must feel bad and I have a thought for him.

Es realmente lamentable que haya personas haciendo eso.
Espero que puedan encontrar una forma para mantener vivo el artblog de Dave.

Saludos

This is really bad news, nothing seems to be safe these days, it is a real shame I have enjoyed seeing you're great work on here Dave.
Yes there could be a way around it by putting a watermark on the work I think Alan Davis does a similar thing. Wishing you all the best with you're current work.

IADW said...

That is sad news but completely understandable.

It was a real treat to see the pencils that went into Dave's iconic art, and hopefully technology comes along that will soon prevent such theft.

Thanks again for everything that's been before, and all the best for the future.

FUCK THOSE PEOPLE!!!
The real fans wants to know more about you and your creative process...

Nooo I just found this blog literally yesterday! :(

Living Rope said...

why don't you just post smaller images. The ones on this blog are quite large and can easily be downsized and still be readable.
The addition of a watermark can also be a good complement.

Damn, that's bad news. Regards, J.

This was one of my favorite blogs :(

you should post stuff at deviantart.com instead. Tons of pros are there...Adam Hughes, Greg Capullo, Sean Murphy, Scott Williams, Jim Lee, just to name a few...

Really sad, it was a privilege to see that jumbo images of your incredible work.

But it's a great move that you keep the tutorials online.

Best,

I feel really angry cause my only contact with my greatest idol is gone, but i hope to get as far as you in the future and have the chance to meet u in person.

creating a deviantart account would be my suggestion as well.

Heaps of pros there and you can size the artwork to how you wish plus add a watermark slowing down the art thieves at least (because nothing will stop them altogether thanx to the wonders of photoshop). Plus if someone does claim your stuff as theirs on DA, you can report them and get a fast result.

I for one have really enjoyed having these large sized pictures posted here and they've been a terrific source of quality material for would-be inkers to use for practise.

I don't blame you for your decision Dave, all the best.
However a friend of mine Sean Ellery Suggested you make a move to Deviant Art for better protection and security options. I agree with him.
All the best!

Please reconsider.

hi - I check this blog on a weekly basis. I'm sorry to hear this news, but forgive me, this sounds ridiculous. I don't know what people are taking, but instead of shutting down the blog, why not use lower res images with visible watermarks? At least start a DeviantArt.com page (if there isn't one already), or a facebook group? Just seems like such a mistake to cut off such a great communication tool that puts fans directly in contact with the master... Instead of quitting the blog, why not rethink the process or expand to other online tools (as mentioned above).

Always a fan,
Phil

Thats a bad decision in my opinion. Totally overreacted. Is it really necessary to shut that blog down, because some ppl sell a few of your drwaings on ebay?! Its not like theyre stealing your real job, which is drawing amazing comics for huge. But thats only my view on things.

Sid Kotian said...

Damn, that's sad. I've been a big fan of Dave's work for years. It was awesome to see his pencils. Maybe you could try big red water marks on the files? Anyway, Thanks for sharing!

Like everyone else tis news makes me sad. And like everyone else I understand.
What I will miss as much as his work is the way the blog lets us in on a more personal level with Mr. Finch. An "official website" of his art reads more like a bio page on the back of a book, this blog graciously allowed us in way never imagined.
Again I am sadened and disappointed but thank you for what I learned and your insite into a the world of comics.

This is terrible news. It's unfortunate people do this kind of thing. David really puts a lot of effort into his work and really tries to help others that want to follow in his footsteps (like me). But I suppose this is for the best.

Michael E. Pritchard said...

(sigh) it's because of Jack Ass' like this, us normal folk can't get to appreciate awesome artwork. Isn't there a way you can track down those thieves and make their lives miserable? Just when I needed to ask Mr. Finch about the new Batman (yellow symbol) and the process behind that, this has to go and happen. Sorry for the loss of sales, and I hope you can sue the people responsible.
Continued good luck to the Finch Family.

Michael

I lament that has made that decision, I become upset for losing that contact with a great artísta like you, it is very annoying to be harmed by a minority, I am imagining if it would not be possible to maintain the blog for a beat-paop (without Lucrative ends) since the problem is that for the that I understood.

in any way for the way will have to accept the decision - I Hug of a fan

It is unfortunate to hear this news, but it is understandable. On the other hand, it is not necessary to close this blog, as David and you can still update the text, just minus all the images. I'm still interested to read about his projects and convention attendance...etc.

Fabio Caravieri said...

David,
hi.
I'm watching your video (gnomon) and in it you draw the body and then his head. You use this method for all types of design?

Peter Pein said...

So sad to here there are cretins in the world that make life difficult for creative people and their fans. Some people have suggested just a text blog... difficult as art is the medium. I love seeing the creative process so the loss of Dave's blog is upsetting.

Anonymous said...

Too bad... This is one of my favorite blogs! I absolutely love it! :) And I don't understand your decision.

My advice: post lower resolution images with watermark in the center... I quess this is the lesser evil. :( Simple but works.

Cheers!

Tatong said...

with much respect to David, we understand that this blog is closing and most of us feel a bit regret for this, it's insane what greedy people out there are doing. I do hope David Finch will still keep in touch with his fans through this blog even if not posting artworks or just simply tips, current gig, etc. I really learned a lot from this blog with just a few stuffs I saw/read.

Wayne Beeman said...

Oh man! I just found your blog. I admire your work and talent. Sorry to see you go. I'll be checking up on youtube for your interviews and tutorials.

Tomas Silverio said...

I was hoping Dave would go to deviant art so this may be his incentive to do so. Adam Hughes is there and he has had art theft problems in the past. He posts small images of his work, answers questions, and gives advice. He also promotes himself by telling people the dates and times of conventions he'll be attending. I would hate to lose the opportunity to see dave's work in conjunction with his tips and advice.

Aaron Choi said...

Can't we find out some ways? Dave is one of the best teacher out there.

lisandro estherren said...

Its a real shame...
Hope we can see more of your work and get your helpfull advices.
Best!

Randy Siplon said...

Some people are so stupid. Whoever did this deserves a beating! Hopefully David can figure out a way to maintain some sort of internet presence in the future.

for argentina its good to learn and see how the really big guys in comic are working, but you are right, people steal no matter what or where, and this is frustrating...
sad news...

This is such a shame. David is one of the comic book artists I admire most.

Boyann said...

I know this sounds unwise to ask... but are you back?
Is the decision changed?

Sir, You are a phenomenal Artist, You are the only way for the field to go. You give depth and meaning to these fictitious characters that was always lacking before your approach. I hope you and your family grow in stature and acclaim, and come to Rule in this Stanley-esque world.
